Episode Transcription

Marko:
All right. Okay. All right. Tomorrow, four countries book a ticket to the World Cup, and four don't. So welcome to the Semi Informed Football Podcast. My name is Marko. I have Mark with me here today, and we're actually going to take a look at the four games that determine the four spots going into the World Cup.

Now, Mark, you did a great job last week with Matteo talking about a lot more games going into the World Cup. I’ve got to give you a lot of credit — I didn’t really know much about teams like New Caledonia or Suriname.

Mark:
Yeah, glad to be back talking about this. Predictions have been pretty good — some Cinderella stories didn’t pan out, but we did well on the European games.

Marko:
Yeah, definitely. Some lucky outcomes, some games going to penalties — really interesting stuff. But let’s jump right into it.

We’ll start with Bosnia vs Italy.

Bosnia had a barnstormer — went to penalties against Wales and came through. I think we both called Wales there, right?

Mark:
Yeah, we both called Wales. We said it would be tight — and it was. Leave it to a veteran Bosnian player stepping up in a big moment.

Marko:
Exactly. Very clinical header — unbelievable.

Italy, meanwhile, beat Northern Ireland 2–0, but honestly it was tougher than expected. First half, they couldn’t create much. That’s how Italy has lost before — controlling possession but failing to finish.

Second half they calmed down, but there are still holes.

This game is in Zenica — small stadium, around 14,000. Reduced Bosnian crowd due to past incidents, and even snowfall recently. So conditions could be tricky.

Where do you see this game going?

Mark:
Interesting storyline — the Italian team was watching Bosnia’s win and celebrating. Di Marco had to come out and clarify it wasn’t disrespect.

But Bosnia might use that as fuel — feeling like Italy prefers playing them.

Marko:
Yeah, and Bosnia is playing with house money.

Also worth noting — people overrated Wales a bit because of past narratives. Bosnia just outlasted them.

Mark:
And Brennan Johnson missing that penalty was huge.

But for Italy, I still think their best strategy is defensive structure — historically that’s what they rely on. And Donnarumma is elite in penalty situations.

Marko:
Absolutely. He was huge in Euro 2020.

But Italy’s attack worries me. Kean looked good, but others are out of form. This could be closer than people think.

I think Italy wins — but barely.

Mark:
Agreed. Italy edges it, but Bosnia winning wouldn’t shock me.

🇸🇪 Sweden vs 🇵🇱 Poland

Marko:
This feels like a knockout-stage game — Sweden’s structure vs Poland’s star power.

Mark:
I think Sweden is faster, younger, and hungrier. Poland feels like they’re declining a bit.

Marko:
I disagree slightly — Lewandowski is still dangerous. Zielinski too.

But Sweden has key injuries — Isak and Kulusevski out — while others are stepping up.

Mark:
Yeah, but some players just perform better for their national teams. Sweden’s cohesion gives them the edge.

Marko:
I’m leaning Sweden too — but it’s a tough one.

🇽🇰 Kosovo vs 🇹🇷 Turkey

Marko:
This is pure emotion vs underachievement.

Turkey should be better than they are. Kosovo just smashed Slovakia — nobody saw that coming.

Mark:
Turkey wins this. Their younger players are developing, and they’re historically strong.

Marko:
They’re always the “dark horse” — but never quite deliver.

Kosovo, though, is dangerous. Nothing to lose.

Mark:
Still going Turkey.

Marko:
I’m going upset — Kosovo.

🇩🇰 Denmark vs 🇨🇿 Czech Republic

Marko:
This might be the best footballing matchup. Very even historically.

Mark:
I disagree — Denmark wins. Strong system, cohesive unit, great players.

Marko:
Yeah, I think Denmark edges it too. Czech Republic can be dangerous — especially with Schick — but Denmark just looks stronger overall.

🧾 FINAL THOUGHTS

Marko:
Four games, four countries in, four out. It’s brutal.

Mark:
Big consequences too. If Italy misses another World Cup — huge questions.

Marko:
Exactly. Italian football needs to evolve — especially attacking development.

Mark:
They have the defense — but they need goals.

Marko:
That’s it. We’re in for some phenomenal games.
