Your hosts are Marko and Mark, longtime friends who are not pundits but have some strong opinions about their favorite sport. Welcome to another episode of the Semi Informed Football podcast, where two regular guys with day jobs leads a chat about the beautiful game.
Marko
My name is Marko and my co-host name is Mark. Mark, You know that some people find that actually really hilarious that it's Marko and Mark hosting?
Mark
Yes, I've been told the same thing.
Marko
Oh, really? Really. So it's not just my my side of it. Okay. Interesting. So on the show on the show today, we have a lot to catch up on. Nations league under €21 championship and some other great player movements and, you know, perspective movements here in Europe. First, we're actually reporting this on June 26th. And in honor of my son Liam, who's nine right now, I'm actually turning into a pretty good defender.
Marko
I want to celebrate the birthday of one of the best defenders out there in recent memory. Anyway, Paolo Maldini all Maldini turns 55 today. So that's June 26. That's 55 today. So who is Paolo Maldini? Well, he was a very, very technical defender.
Mark
A legend?
Marko
Yeah, a legend. Again. Also a son of a legend to Cesare Maldini. That's Rosa also was a milan legend as well. So again, Paolo Maldini also kind of broke out in 85, eight, 1985. He broke out in 1985 and AC Milan, He spent his his entire career there. He played 25 years until 41.
Mark
That's them saying unreal.
Marko
Yeah, yeah. No, no. It's like these defend these defenders. They have an extra piece of oomph or whatever to kind of push them through it. But he was phenomenal. Like I ended up, I saw some video and it's just his tackling ability was phenomenal. His just kind of awareness of the game and also that that extra little bit of pep in the step too.
Marko
He had to chase down an attacker. It was an unreal, right?
Mark
Yeah, I would say he's definitely got to be one of the top three top five best defenders of all time.
Marko
So interesting that too, because I kind of had that written down as well. So these are the defenders that I kind of rate really to. So Franz Beckenbauer in the seventies, again, not that I've never seen him in person, never seen him live or anything like that, but I've seen some videos of him like he really kind of made that sort of that that sweeper role.
Marko
And he has such amazing kind of technical presence and just the kind of a view for the game. So another phenomenal one there. Again, more recent history, maybe the nineties, the eighties. Franco Baresi, Matthias Sommer were both great, maybe not too long ago, but that match on, on, on Manchester United, I just, I just thought it was it was unreal.
Marko
I forgot who was quoted about him. But they said that Vidic puts his head where other people won't even put their foot. So it was just it was just it's just unreal. So those are those are our meaning. What?
Mark
Roberto Carlos, Harry Maguire.
Marko
Yeah. Okay. We're, we're going to have a little chuckle there and that, but also another one too. I kind of a youngster is really, really touted heavily right now. But yeah, your score got Vardy all 100 million over €100 million transfer plus for man city to rip them away from Red Bull It's pretty unreal but again he had a phenomenal World Cup I think he only had one bad game Yeah World war Well no or Messi undressed them on one play right.
Marko
Yeah. Other than that he had almost a perfect tournament. But again, over 100 million just to kind of land him and again man city has that has that money and we'll see that things later on.
Mark
Yeah I'm interested he left his team of choice in the prem is Liverpool so he grew up with his dad watching every Liverpool game and if he could, he would. He'd actually want to go to Liverpool.
Marko
I guess it's, it's the, it's the down arrow there that. Yeah. You can hard, hard, hard to get again just in spite of this. I know that took a lot look a lot of tweets right now just wishing Maldini a happy birthday and so the club AC Milan actually wished them a happy birthday. And the if anybody doesn't know, they actually just fire him.
Marko
A few weeks ago, he was the technical director of AC Milan, the club where he spent all of his life. So Jerry Cardinale, who is the CEO of Redbird, AC Milan, is actually going to be one of those teams that kind of looks for more kind of economic profitability rather than, you know, like the love of football, which I guess makes sense for a business.
Marko
But again, if you're a die hard, a red and black mercenary fan, that's really going to be tough. So, you know what? They're really looking to kind of tighten up the books and, you know, not make these crazy signings anymore, which is which is going to be rough because I know in the city there's a lot of teams sort of in the red.
Marko
You know, you have your inter, you have your AC, who knows where you've entered is. Well, I guess we all know where you went to because their books are open and they're they're getting charged for it. So but but.
Mark
Yeah from FSG. Redbird Capital the you know the owners behind Liverpool and this investment in Milan as well I think they're they learned a lesson or hopefully they learned a lesson after this past season. How do you maintain this fine line between running a business, being profitable and at the same time being competitive enough so that you can keep generating that money?
Mark
Because the situation right now is that Liverpool didn't make the Champions League and they're missing out on a lot.
Marko
Yeah, it's unreal how much lost capital. That is also a big, huge push to get back in. But it's crazy. Like again, even looking at the stats from Maldini five champions leagues with with Milan. So that was yeah, that was an unreal team of the eighties and one.
Mark
Of the greatest teams as a milan fan, I just remember those were the days of Van Basten Rijkaard Ruud Gullit, Maldini just phenomenal tenure.
Marko
And again also also with him, bad luck, though. He was in three World Cups his last one being 2002 are right before they actually won in 2006. So I think that's the only trophy not on it is Cabinet, the World Cup, but everything else. What I was there which is which is unreal. So happy birthday to Paul Maldini.
Mark
Happy birthday, Paolo.
Marko
Next up, we're going to talk about the nations league. So this was a I guess, something that was contested. And the final was just recently Spain over Croatia in penalties, a very, very hard fought game. I didn't think that game was ever going to end, but it finally went up ten penalties and right at the end, 5 to 4, Spain emerged triumphant.
Marko
It was it was it was a crazy game. A lot of people saying is, you know, does Modric still have have it in him? And you know, he does because he played a phenomenal game.
Mark
He did? Yeah.
Marko
You know what? Hats off to Spain, You know, that was great. On next. So we'll look at the third place game where Italy triumphed over Netherlands. You know, this was this is tough because again, not making the World Cup, it was really, really challenging for them. But then losing to Spain in the semis to not go into the final, but actually playing the Netherlands and beating them three two for the third place game, I think this was a little bit is sort of, you know, a little bit of a win for them after kind of losing out so many games.
Marko
Like again we would like we spoke on the last podcast, the Champions League final, the UEFA Conference League final, the Euro.
Mark
Europa League final, the euro. And they also lost in the under 22 World Cup.
Marko
Under 20 World Cup final. So you know what a loss for for Italy. But again this was at least one to kind of hang your hat on at least. So I know it's not going to make many people happy, but it you know, it's something. Right.
Mark
I mean, as many losses as we talk about, let's talk about the fact that it's consistently Italy that's making it into the top three, top two of these tournaments, which gives them hope for, you know, the next euro, the next World Cup. Right. A lot of promising young players coming up.
Marko
Hey, Mark, what happened in the CONCACAF Nations League final?
Mark
All right. So the CONCACAF Nations League final featured the U.S. and Canada, two strong teams nowadays in the CONCACAF region. And it also featured the return of GIO Arena. So there was some controversy about Gio Arena and coach Gregg Berhalter earlier. We'll talk about that in another episode, I'm sure. But Gio Arena, he was impactful. He helped lead the states to two goals.
Mark
The first was a quality corner and there was just horrible defending on Canada's part. I thought Brian should have had the save. I actually thought as good as the corner kick that the gio took. Brian should have come out and he would have had it. It wasn't too far out in the box. It was close to the sixth.
Mark
But nevertheless, the states got ahead. Iran other took a one nothing lead. They kept the pressure up. And then Gio Arena had a beautiful through ball to Arsenal. Prodigy Balagan.
Marko
Yeah. What I saw about from Alphonso DAVIES, I found that it wasn't his best game. He was almost trying to push the play a little bit too much, you know, making that extra run when it when he should have passed it off, making kicks from very, very odd angles. I really don't think he had a great game either.
Mark
The guy who impressed me was Ismael Koné. He did a great little move down the right flank in the first half, a great through ball to Kyle, Aaron and Kyle there and really disappoint ID me this game a lot of his shots were right at the keeper or you know when Richie Lauria got in there made a good cross into the box.
Mark
He was stagnant, didn't move. The defender got to it first, and then he put up his hands to his head. And I'm thinking, Buddy, where were you? Like, that ball's getting crossed right into the six. Like you should be First to the ball. This is basics you stack. You also had a shot on that. But it was again, easy.
Mark
An easy save for the keeper. I Canada didn't look themselves like you said. I don't know if the thing with Alphonso DAVIES is is party ego party going that you know he's letting this you know Canada's star player the guy who plays for ball and get to his head because of Bayern. You know he's amongst other top quality players with Vancouver.
Mark
He was more in a four position. He was scoring goals. Bayern put him at left back and when he's with Canada he wants to be back scoring goals, which is fine and he's got the skill, he's got the speed. But I think you're right that he's taking on too much, needs to have a bit more trust in his teammates.
Mark
And I don't know if this is also a case of HERDMAN. The coach needs to really rein him in because quite frankly, the forward they should be using to score is Jonathan David. Hey, Jonathan. David plays this position for his club for two consecutive seasons now. He's been in the top five in scoring in League One right up there with Kylian Mbappe.
Mark
I really think that they need to put a bit more trust in Jonathan.
Marko
David Yeah, I agree with that. They have a lot of other weapons to use to John Buchanan to quickies, anything like again, I've seen him in games and yeah, World Cup qualifying last year were like you couldn't get a hold on on him look again very very very good a good opportunity but again not you know it was probably just an off game for them.
Marko
I know a lot of football being played this year right after the World Cup. So, you know, let's chalk it up to that.
Mark
Yeah. And let's talk about the second half, because I thought Brian really came out to play. He saved them. I mean, he made some incredible saves. One off another great American player who doesn't get enough credit at his club team, Christian Blue Cilic. He had an amazing shot that Brian was going one way and he had to turn it go the other way.
Mark
He made a save with his fingertips.
Marko
I don't know about not getting enough credit. I think a lot of people say Christian Pulisic is like one of the best Americans of all time too. I would agree again and again and again. They do have a lot of quality and a lot of quality wasn't even at that game. So that's another thing. I do find their football team, the U.S. men's national football team, they're very, very egotistical.
Marko
So like even in wins, they they come off as being pretty aggressive.
Mark
So and I also thought that Canada let it get to their head that sergino dest and mckennie were out. Yeah. So they were involved in those red cards against the Mexican team. By the way, I think the Mexican team is is really feeling it that the U.S. and Canada are getting stronger. It's really upsetting them. And I think that's why they get into these tussles.
Mark
They know they're losing. And, you know, in that semifinal game between Mexico, the United States, there were four red cards. So those are two key players, Mckennie and dest. I think Canada let that get to their hat. Oh, they're missing two great players and it backfired.
Marko
Okay, so let's move on to our next topic. The under €21 in Romania and in Georgia. This is out with this pathway through the group stage. We're already in matchday two and some kind of interesting results. We were talking a little bit off line with this, but Group A, so Georgia and Belgium tied two two. Now Georgia, I think everybody probably would have written them off, you know, a year ago.
Marko
As you know they're they're easy team to walk walk over but this last year I think I think you actually once said a player of the year but phosa Coach Scalia, who you know, was playing phenomenal on Napoli, he's actually bringing a little bit of credence to the Georgian team. Is there anybody else on that team potentially that you want to highlight?
Marko
Is there anybody else good?
Mark
Yeah, I think Avars really leading the charge and I think there's a lot of great development with Georgian players. The one that stands out is Giorgio Ramadoss Vili, who's only 22 years old. But this gigantic goalkeeper is already the number one for club and country. He plays in Valencia, I believe in La Liga and if memory serves me correctly, he started all 38 of Valencia's games this past season.
Marko
Interesting for such a young player, especially at the Keeper position.
Mark
Yeah. 22 That's that's really young to be a starting keeper.
Marko
Yeah. And Valencia is an old kind of slouch of a team. I think they're mid-table mid-table least moving into group B now this one. Interesting. So Ukraine over Romania one nothing Ukraine second win again maybe everybody's kind of sentimental favorite because of what's happening in Europe but Ukraine over that been over Croatia won nothing it looks like Croatia's out it so they lost to Ukraine in the first one.
Marko
Yeah so looks like unfortunately in this one they're out of it.
Mark
Yeah. Spain and Ukraine are through because they both have two wins.
Marko
Okay, Group C now, this is the one that really kind of makes me angry though. Czechia two one over Germany. Now, I watched this game. It was so unfortunate. Germany just had no luck here. And I think the go ahead goal from Czechia, it was just unfortunate. It just it just ricocheted off the defenders, but it went right into it right in the net.
Marko
So that's unfortunate. But another great player who scored the goal and had a few other opportunities on the German team angle is still here which not another great prospect.
Mark
Yeah and this is an interesting group because as you said, two games are already been played. So the the final game for Germany comes against first place England. That's going to be a really tough match. But even if the Germans win, they're going to need Israel to beat Czechia because with a win, Czechia is through okay.
Marko
Is leading to a very interesting group, Group D with Switzerland, Italy, Norway and France. So last game, Italy triumphed over Switzerland. Three, two. One of my personal favorite players on this team are Willi Nonso, who I think is going to be one of the forward prospects for Italy going forward. I think he's going to be one of the top forwards in the next maybe ten, 12 years or so.
Marko
He scored in this game. They looked very, very strong and also France prevailing over Norway.
Mark
Yeah. And so what's interesting about this group is going into the third match, no team is through yet. I mean, even though France has two wins and they're sitting on six points, Italy has a win, so they've got three points and Switzerland has a win. So they're sitting on three points as well. Now, the final matches are Italy versus Norway and Switzerland versus France.
Mark
If Switzerland beats France, they could jump to the top of the group or second in the group and actually knock France out of the first place and knock them out of the the next round. But I do want to talk about the France Italy game. France did beat Italy 3 to 1. And you know, in this game we saw a lot of big name players for the U21 tournament.
Mark
We saw Sandro Tonali for Italy and we saw Kerim Thuram from France. There's a couple of other big names in this tournament right from Ukraine. We got Modric, Spain's guy Gaby Vega. We talked about Amad. That's really for Georgia Gravenberch Ryan Gravenberch from the Netherlands, I mean Geary from France. Do you think of any other big name players in this tournament now?
Marko
I think you'd need to name them all like I was. I was going to say as well, Ryan Gravenberch are very familiar with one. We're not getting the really the time he needed last year again by being very, very deep. But I think I think he's in there. He's a prospect going forward. I actually having such a strong team in the past few years and a lot of bigger teams in Europe just kind of poaching on that.
Marko
So also another pick up from there was Mazraoui a back from a back from Ajax. But yeah, I actually it seemed like it was a talent factory.
Mark
So yeah, they are.
Marko
A lot of that, a lot of stuff for, for, for them to pick from like I know Erik ten hag over there in United is paying a whole lot of attention.
Mark
And so what's interesting about all these young players in this tournament, we're into the transfer market season, a lot of signings, a lot of rumors. But I think because of this tournament, a lot of teams, you know, out of respect, have decided not continue with negotiations with some of these players until the tournament's done. And this can have a backfiring effect.
Mark
So a player like from Thuram, for example, long rumored to go to Liverpool, but the way he's playing at this tournament, the talk is that his price is going to go up another 5 million. So if they had signed him earlier, get him at a better deal. But other players like Sandro Tonali have already signed. Sandro Tonali was at a great team in Milan and I think this came as a shock to me as a milan fan.
Mark
He signed with Newcastle United. I hadn't heard any rumors about his movement prior, so it really hurt. I mean, it really came out of left field. I'm actually surprised he's he decides to.
Marko
Go and I recall a hearing in the in the media just over the last few days, him crying because you know that this was his boyhood club, AC Milan, and he really wanted to be that again. We talked that to the top of the show, Paolo Maldini. He wanted to be have that kind of Paolo Maldini career. But, you know, it wasn't meant to be.
Marko
So I guess that was an amazing Segway. What are the other interesting signings that we've seen over the last maybe a week or so?
Mark
So another prediction of ours came true when we talked about Man City after the Champions League. We said a number of players we thought would leave the team. Ilkay Gundogan has gone to Barcelona on a free transfer. He had options. He was mulling a return to City going to Arsenal, I think we talked about. But in the end he chose Barcelona.
Mark
And how about this one, Marko? Guerrero move from Borussia Dortmund to rival Bayern München.
Marko
Yeah, that's crazy. I think we talked on earlier episodes of, you know, the Big Rivals players that kind of cross the lines and everything like that. But, you know, Guerrero being I was in Dortmund for about seven seasons already, really kind of cementing his his legacy there at Dortmund. You know a chance to you know, sign with Bayern and again the the uproar was really, really, you know tangible.
Marko
I'd never seen a video of him leaving or Italy leaving for the airport in in Dortmund in a in a taxicab and people were just mobbing him and you know just the the vitriol and the heat on social media has been really, really crazy. So yeah, that's that's another one that's really, really tough. But again. LEWANDOWSKI another player that ended up crossing lines like that, you know, it's not something that many players do.
Marko
And you know what? You know, these football fans, they have long memories, right? So it they're not they're not cheering for you at your new club.
Mark
Yeah, definitely not. So let's get on to the rumors, Marko. Let's talk about some rumors here for sure. I'll start it off. You know, I'm going to talk about my Liverpool rumors. And interestingly enough, a lot of the Liverpool rumors are those players, those big name players in this U-21 tournament. So Kefrem Thuram, the son of Lilian Turn, Lilian Thuram, the World Cup winner with France and his brother just signed with or is going to sign with Inter and he's doing his medical now.
Mark
So Kefrem Thuram has long been rumored to be joining Liverpool. As I mentioned, I believe the rumor earlier on was a transfer fee of €35 million, I believe. And again, with his play in this tournament, it looks like it's that price is moving up and the last I read was about 40 million. I just hope that he's not a player that another team comes in and poaches right.
Mark
That's happened before with teams that's happening right now with Man City and the Declan Rice thing. We'll talk about that later. But he he's a great addition that I think would really help the Liverpool team He's really a strong defensive mid which is exactly what they need but the other the other names linked to Liverpool are Gabby Vega and Ryan Gravenberch.
Mark
Gabby is a great midfielder as well, very, very talented. His play at CELTA Vigo this year was unbelievable. I'm still on the fence about grave work. I think he's a great prospect and even though they're all around the same age, I don't know if if he's the player that can step into Liverpool's mid as a starter right now, I mean I'd still sign them.
Mark
I think that's a great, great value. But yeah, that's what I'm looking at as a, as a Liverpool fan, I know that there's been rumors that Liverpool have contacted Madrid about Fedi Valverde or Tchouameni. I've spoken about that before too. Fantastic pics. I don't know how much of that is possible. I can see Madrid giving up on those two players, but only for a price over 100 million.
Mark
And we know Liverpool's not going there.
Marko
Yeah, they're not in the market there. So we mentioned Tonali a few moments ago and again signing with Newcastle, so he's out of that. But how's this for a Liverpool rumor?
Mark
Nicolo Barella Yeah, that's, it's a player of the year. You, Klopp has openly said he loves, he loves his style of play, he thinks he would fit the system fantastically. He's a fantastic player, don't get me wrong, but there's a lot of his game that I've seen. I actually think he's the one to blame for some goals. Fouls too close to the box, which lead to free kicks that cause goals.
Mark
So is is he the sort of cream we need? I don't know. I still think he'd be a great impact. But then again, that all depends on on your on your you transfer right And I'm still suspect.
Marko
On Virgil say I guess staying in England Declan Rice that Glen Rice rumors to man City rumors arsenal I think they're getting kind of in a bidding war with those with those two and West Ham just kind of sitting there by sitting back and just enjoying the process because I think he you seemed to, I guess, keep outbidding each other.
Marko
And I think even United has been in on that. But again, Declan Rice, where do you see him ending up City Definitely.
Mark
Because initially he was dead set on going to Arsenal and Man City said, listen, we're not going to bid unless the player is willing to come to city and discuss and discuss personal terms. So when these negotiations go on, there's a multi layer to them. The player needs to discuss personal terms with the team and then the teams on a different layer need to discuss a transfer fee and you need to have both components.
Mark
So if Declan Rice was dead set on going to Arsenal, the personal terms would have been agreed and then it would just be a matter of West Ham and Arsenal hashing it out. So the fact that he is open to move into City tells me that, you know what? He didn't care what team he was going to sit.
Mark
He is going to throw more wages at him. And so and he's looking at a phenomenal city squad. And so I think he'll end up with Manchester City.
Marko
I honestly think city's going to get all of their targets. So. Declan Rice, Yasuko Carvajal, It's so common which kovacevic few on the United Transfer rumors. Mason Mount potentially going over to Manchester United.
Mark
Although I heard that one was Manchester is putting it on hold because they still think that he's too.
Marko
I who knows well what's happening. I think he had an off year at Chelsea Wise. Everybody had a long period last year.
Mark
So Chelsea had an off year.
Marko
So now and then the last United rumor, which I really think he's a phenomenal player but Minjae Kim yeah center back from Napoli really had a phenomenal year.
Mark
And someone else who I read was linked to Bayern.
Marko
I think that's another one where they were kind of cutting each other down over this one. So interesting. Like again, Bayern spending $80 million until last year. They're not typically that big of a spender duo with players, but again, maybe chasing down Kim as well. So that would be interesting.
Mark
Now the Mason Mount rumors to the United, I heard that those were put on hold. I think Manchester is really getting tired of Chelsea trying to get every single penny, especially if there's not much competition. The last I heard was that they were zoning in on Moises Casado, phenomenal Ecuadorian player who plays for Brighton Hove and Albion.
Marko
Yeah, but I hear the prices are really, really high on him too. I think it's north of 60.
Mark
Yeah, but but I mean he's younger and I think he's got a, a higher ceiling.
Marko
Hey, Mark, right before we wrap things up, what's with the U.S. and, you know, the football competitions going forward?
Mark
Yes. Interestingly enough, it looks like they're really pushing football soccer, as Infantino mentioned, in the United States over the next three years, the United States are going to be hosting three consecutive big tournaments. So in 2024, they'll be hosting the Copa America. In 2025, they'll be hosting the first edition of the new 32 team club World Cup. That's in 2025.
Mark
And then, of course, in 2026, the United States are the co-hosts with Canada and Mexico hosting the men's World Cup. So that's that's some big news. That's great for North American fans who follow European football like we do, because in 2025, I'm really excited to see this club World Cup. That'll it'll be interesting. They'll go down and watch, let's say a madrid versus TFC or Milan versus Montreal or something like that, Right.
Marko
I agree with you. That's, that's going to be should be quite interesting now running into vacation so young under 21 right now is in Midway we were just talking about that that's going to be wrapping up soon.
Mark
Yeah. Ends July eight.
Marko
July 20th. That's going to be kicking off going to August 20th as well. So, you know what, That not much room for vacation in England world football thing I really want to give a shout out to is Andrea who who's a soccer mom on my son's team she was recently on a morning show here in Toronto hyping, you know, how to stay fit on vacation.
Marko
You know, what are some equipment that you can actually bring with you. So really, really quick segment to 3 minutes long. Really interesting. But I'm going to send a link down in the comments. So give that give that a watch is pretty interesting. And again, we all want our summer bods right?
